This is the story of a little kid riding his very first bike race.
His bike is nothing special; heavy, a mass-produced clunker with fat tires. The kid looks kinda funny too. This being Canada, he’s borrowed a buddy’s hockey helmet to ride the race, a race he ends up winning. It’s 1973 and the kid’s name is Gervais Rioux and he’s about to discover a whole new world, the wonderful world of cycling and he decides right there and then that he is going to make that world his. A few years later, he witnesses the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and there’s no turning back now, his path is set: he too must reach the topmost rung of the ladder, the pinnacle of cycling achievement, pushing the envelope to the limit.

3D Headtube* is a structural extension of the headtube. It keeps the headset bearings close to the stem, maximising rigidity and steering accuracy even when the rider chooses an upright position. With its stiffness intact, the stem/bar combination favors hard accelerations. Three positions are available: 0mm, 10mm and 20mm.
HDS: the Horizontal Dual System is a design that varies the shape and size of the various frame sections according to the stresses experienced by each. Power transfer is remarkably efficient, response is immediate.
Internal S3: the S3 principle, applied internally. Reinforcements inside
the frame vary according to frame size, putting extra material only where
necessary, reducing needless weight while improving stiffness for a complete
power transfer.
Easy positioning, accurate trajectories, AFS road geometry: the Argon 18
Fit System is based on years of knowledge about the geometries required to make a bike most efficient and enjoyable to ride. This is why Argon 18 bikes are more comfortable, maximizing the rider’s potential.

S3: Specific Sizing Specs
S3 enhances the inherent qualities of monocoque construction while ensuring an optimal balance of rigidity, comfort and light weight in each frame size. First implemented in 2005, S3 has a dramatic effect on a bike’s performance and handling:
  • Even the largest frames exhibit exceptional lateral rigidity without excess weight, avoiding that “dead” feel.
  • Small frames retain their inherent light-weight without excessive rigidity, avoiding a harsh ride.
 
1) Tube shape and external reinforcement
Using our exclusive molds, we have optimized top and downtube shapes to make them better function together. Both the oval shape as well as the outer reinforcement ridges on both sides of the headtube work together to favor:
  • Increased performance compared to standard monocoque frames. The resulting weight reduction gives the front end a light feel, but retains enough lateral stiffness for accurate steering.
  • A unified feel in the front triangle. This impression of the bike being “all of a piece” is one of the most notable characteristics of S3 frames. When accelerating on hills and out of tight turns, response is quicker than with traditional monocoque frames.

2) Variable tube size
The S3 concept involves graduated top and down tube sizes throughout the range of frame sizes. In the area surrounding the bottom bracket shell, the width of the downtube increases by 6% from the XXS size frame to the XL.

Similarly, this tube remains 22% wider than it is tall in every size. Power transfer is direct and complete, yet weight is contained.
Top tube: Top tube shape remains the same throughout tube length. The following table indicates overall tube size increase as frame size increases:

Downtube: This tube spans the headtube and bottom bracket shell and is subject to different stresses at each end.

At the headtube, the downtube must counter longitudinal and vertical forces coming up from the road. To maintain efficiency and durability, the tube section at this end must be taller than it is wide.

SECTION B: In the bottom bracket area, the tube must resist the deflection caused by the pedaling motion. To fully transfer power to the back wheel, it must be rigid.
* However, too tall a top tube section here will make the bike too stiff and the ride less comfortable.
